In a collaboration with TOYOTA MOTOR CORPORATION Frontier Research Center, Obayashi has developed the Highway Panel Rack technique of installing low-rise noise barriers on expressways. The panels can be rapidly installed so that highway lane closure times can be minimized.

A single work vehicle can continuously perform every process associated with noise barrier installation and can install about seven times faster than conventional technique.Lane closure time can be cut by about half.

Conventionally, noise barrier installation requires multiple vehicles to do the work processes of stowing, transporting, sliding out, and installing the barriers. It also has to be done during limited nighttime hours or in limited space during certain hours. The circumstances have presented big challenges, such as how to shorten construction time and ease the burden on workers. The recently developed the Highway Panel Rack technique solves these issues by completing all processes from the cargo bed of just one vehicle.
