Building a Better Future: Diversity and Inclusion Initiatives at PT Jaya Obayashi

On September 7, 2023, Mrs. KISHIDA Yuko, Spouse of the Prime Minister, visited Jakarta, to attend the 43rd ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations)-related Summit meetings. Mrs. Kishida visited PT Jaya Obayashi and exchanged views with company representatives regarding PT Jaya Obayashi ongoing commitment to Diversity and Inclusion (D&I) initiatives that have been implemented and continue to grow across the business.

PT Jaya Obayashi, an Indonesian subsidiary of Obayashi Corporation, a major Japanese general contractor has been operating in Indonesia for more than 50 years, Mrs. Kishida was briefed by Mr. Koichiro Minami (President Director, PT Jaya Obayashi) on the series of projects that the business has successfully delivered.

PT Jaya Obayashi is actively promoting diversity initiatives.

In February 2023, Jaya Obayashi became the second company in Indonesia and first in the Construction Industry to be awarded ISO 30415, an international standard on human resource management—diversity and inclusion for urging organizations to strengthen their businesses through the use of various human resources. 

Jaya Obayashi was recognized for employing individuals with disabilities in its in-house café and providing dedicated facilities for Breastfeeding mothers.

PT Jaya Obayashi understands that promoting women’s involvement and empowerment in the construction industry is a crucial aspect of diversity and inclusion initiatives. Aligned with Japan’s Act on Promotion of Women’s Participation and Advancement in the Workplace, one of Japanese government program, the company has established action plans to be implemented across the company’s global network. Not only PT Jaya Obayashi has implemented unbiased recruitment and hiring practices, the company also actively encourages female employees to take on leading roles and creates safe work environment for women to thrive, whether it’s in the office or at construction sites.

Mrs. Rina Ambarwati, HR & GA Manager of PT Jaya Obayashi, explained that the company has taken concrete actions to show the company’s commitment to D&I, and one of them was to provide a lactation room within its head office compound for the company’s female employees. Lactation room is a private space where working mothers can express breast milk during working hours comfortably. The room provides a quiet, clean, and secure environment, equipped with amenities such as comfortable seating, electrical outlets for breast pumps, refrigeration facilities for storing expressed milk, and even informational resources related to breastfeeding. By providing this accommodation, PT Jaya Obayashi is hoping that the female employees will be able to work productively without having to feel that they must choose between their careers and childcare.

Mrs. Kishida was introduced to Nadhif, one of PT Jaya Obayashi’s employees with autism who is currently working as in-house barista in the office.
Mrs. Kishida was shown artworks made by individuals with autism that are currently showcased in the company’s office lounge.

PT Jaya Obayashi believes that people with autism can be highly productive and successful in various aspects of life, including work, education, and personal pursuits. The business has considered the specific challenges related to social interactions, communication, or sensory sensitivities, these challenges can often be managed with a dedicated calming space and the support and understanding of trained staff within team. The company actively promotes to foster an inclusive and supportive environment that allows individuals with autism to thrive and utilize their talents to the fullest extent.

Diversity and inclusion initiatives in PT Jaya Obayashi are not just about meeting legal requirements; they are about creating a more equitable, innovative, and successful industry. Providing equal opportunities for women and individuals with disabilities is an essential step towards building a workforce that reflects the broader community and embraces the talents and abilities of all its members. By fostering D&I, PT Jaya Obayashi believes that it can pave the way for a brighter, more inclusive future for the construction industry.
